How to Play Wordle Unlimited Free Online
Folio is DLE HQ’s unlimited five-letter word game. Each round hides one word. You have six guesses. Every guess has to be a real five-letter word, and the tiles tell you what to do next. This is a wordle unlimited format with a different name, a paper-and-ink board, and blue, apricot, and slate tiles. Unofficial game. Not affiliated with The New York Times or Wordle. The logo is the word Folio, not a newspaper masthead, and the colors are not the green-and-yellow pair people associate with that puzzle.
The board above this guide is the game, including on the homepage where Folio is embedded so you can start a round without a second click through the site. Type on a physical keyboard or tap the on-screen keys. Enter submits the guess. Backspace, or the Del key, removes a letter. A new word is ready as soon as the round ends, and the New word button starts another round immediately if you want to leave the current one.
Folio is the word game on this site. If you want a listening puzzle instead, play Songless Unlimited, the free music guessing game, which is an older page, or start from the DLE HQ homepage and browse the rest of the shelf. Word puzzles as a group live under Word DLE games.
Use a keyboard, with no download
There is nothing to install. The game is a page. On a computer, click the board once so the iframe has focus, then type. Letters, Enter, and Backspace are all read from the physical keyboard. On a phone, the on-screen keyboard at the bottom of the board is the reliable path, because it sits inside the game and does not depend on the browser focusing a hidden field.
The on-screen keys pick up color as you play. A letter that you have placed correctly stays blue. A letter that is in the word but in the wrong spot stays apricot. A letter that is absent goes slate, and further guesses will not need it. If a letter was apricot and you later put it in the right spot, the key upgrades to blue. The best information wins. The key never goes backwards.
Colorblind colors, and a share line you can read without color
The Colorblind colors button is on the board. Turn it on and it stays on in this browser. Correct tiles keep the blue fill and gain a white inner rim. Present tiles switch to diagonal stripes. Absent tiles keep a dark fill and gain a slash. A one-line legend under the grid repeats that in words: solid blue with a white rim, stripes, or a slash.
Share result copies text, not a picture. The grid uses # for a right spot, + for a wrong spot, and - for a letter that is absent. Those marks do not depend on seeing green or yellow. The copied note repeats the legend and the disclaimer. It does not include the hidden word, so you can paste it without spoiling the round for someone who has not played.
Wordle Unlimited Rules for Every Online Round
Unlimited means a new word every round, with no daily lock and no cap on how many rounds you play. The hidden word is always five letters. You get six guesses. A guess that is not five letters is refused. A guess that is not in the accepted list is refused, the row shakes, and you do not lose that turn. Guessing the same word twice is also refused. Only a real, new attempt changes the board.
Tiles are scored with the letters that are still unexplained. Correct spots are taken first. Any identical letter you still have left can mark a later tile as present, in the wrong spot. Extra copies of a letter are absent once the word has no more of that letter to give. That is why a guess can show one apricot A and one slate A. The word only had one.
A worked example of duplicate letters
Suppose the hidden word is robot and you guess roomy. The R and the first O are in the right spots, so those tiles are blue. The second O in roomy is not sitting on the second O in robot, but robot still has an O you have not accounted for, so that tile is apricot. M and Y are absent. The next guess should keep R and O in front and look for a place to use the other O, instead of hunting for M or Y.
If you solve the word, the message tells you how many guesses it took and your streak goes up by one. If the sixth guess is wrong, the word is shown and the streak returns to zero. Streak, best streak, and wins are stored on this device only. There is no account. New word after a loss or a win starts a fresh round at once. Leaving a round early with New word does not count as a loss and does not add a win.
- Each round is one five-letter word and six guesses.
- Blue, or a # in the share text: the letter is in the right spot.
- Apricot, stripes, or a +: the letter is in the word, in the wrong spot.
- Slate, a slash, or a -: the letter is not in the word, or it is an extra copy.
- Guesses must be in the accepted list. Invented strings do not spend a turn.
- Share copies the pattern, not the answer.
- Colorblind colors can be switched on at any time and are remembered here.
- A new round is available immediately. There is no daily wait.
The open word list behind the rounds
Accepted guesses are five-letter words from ENABLE1, the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon compiled by Alan Beale and M. Bryce and released to the public domain. This build accepts 8,616 guesses. Answers are a 2,500-word subset of those words that also show up often in ordinary English, so the hidden word is usually one you have seen in print. A short list of slurs and vulgar terms was removed from both lists, so they are not chosen as solutions and they are not accepted as guesses.
This is not the New York Times Wordle word list, and Folio is not trying to reproduce that game’s daily answer. The license note shipped with the game is in WORDLIST-LICENSE.txt next to the word file. The board itself also prints the ENABLE1 credit under the keys. If a word you know is rejected, it is simply outside this list. That is a property of the dictionary we used, not a judgment that the word is fake.
Tips for Free Online Wordle Unlimited Rounds
Open with a word that teaches you something
Your first guess should spend five different, common letters. A word like crane or stale tells you about letters that appear constantly in English. Starting with a word full of rare consonants feels clever and usually wastes the turn. You are not trying to solve on guess one. You are trying to cut the list in half.
After the first answer, look at absences before you look at hits. Slate keys are the letters you can stop typing. If three of your opener’s letters are gone, the second guess should be five new letters, not a shuffle of the same ones. Two broad guesses often tell you more than an early attempt to nail a half-known word.
Place the apricot letters on purpose
An apricot tile is a letter with a forbidden seat. Do not put it back in the same column. If the A was apricot in column two, column two is finished for A. Try it at the start or the end, where English actually puts vowels, before you bury it in the middle again. When you have two apricot letters, find a real word that moves both of them. Guessing a string that only moves one, and repeats a slate letter, is how rounds reach the sixth line.
Watch counts. If one L is blue and a second L comes back slate, the word has a single L. Chasing “allay” shapes after that is a stall. Say the pattern out loud if that helps: one L, an R in front, no E. Unlimited rounds are a good place to practice that sentence, because the next word arrives immediately and you can try the habit again.
Use Colorblind colors if blue and apricot are hard to separate on your screen. The stripes and the slash carry the same information, and the share text uses #, +, and - so a friend can read the result without those hues. Turn the option on once. It stays on for the next round.
Folio is one game on a small site. When you want a break from letters, the DLE HQ homepage has the games that are actually built, and Songless Unlimited is there if you would rather name a song than a word.
FAQ
Is Folio a wordle unlimited game?
Folio is an unlimited five-letter word game in that family: a new word every round, six guesses, and tile clues. Its name is Folio. It is an unofficial game and it is not affiliated with The New York Times or Wordle.
Is it free, and do I need to download it?
Yes, it is free, and no, you do not download it. It runs online in the browser on this page and in the homepage embed. There is no account.
Does the word change every day or every round?
Every round. There is no daily word and no waiting period. New word starts another puzzle immediately. You can play one round or a long session.
How do the colors work?
Blue means the letter is in the right spot. Apricot means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot. Slate means it is not in the word, or it is an extra copy beyond the letters the word actually has.
Is there a colorblind option?
Yes. Colorblind colors adds a white rim to correct tiles, stripes to present tiles, and a slash to absent tiles. The choice is saved in this browser. The share text also uses #, +, and - so it can be read without color.
Can I use my computer keyboard?
Yes. Click the board, then type letters. Enter submits and Backspace deletes. The on-screen keyboard does the same things if you are on a touch screen.
Why was my word rejected?
It is not in the accepted guess list, or it is not five letters, or you already guessed it. The list is 8,616 five-letter ENABLE1 words. A word can be real English and still sit outside that list.
What word list does Folio use?
Guesses and answers come from ENABLE1, a public-domain lexicon compiled by Alan Beale and M. Bryce. Answers are a 2,500-word common subset. It is not the New York Times Wordle list. A short list of slurs and vulgar terms was removed.
What does Share result copy?
A text grid for the finished round, a one-line legend, and the disclaimer. It does not copy the hidden word. If the browser blocks the clipboard, the text is shown on the board so you can copy it yourself.
Is my streak saved online?
No. Streak, best streak, and win count stay in local storage on this device. Clearing site data for DLE HQ resets them. There is no leaderboard.
