How to Play This Free Heardle-Style Game Online
Hookstep is DLE HQ’s daily song puzzle, built in a heardle style: you hear a short intro, you guess the song, and each miss opens a longer piece of the same clip. The game has its own name, its own coral-and-navy board, and its own logo of six rising bars. Unofficial fan-made game. Not affiliated with Spotify or Heardle. Nothing on this page uses a Spotify login, a Spotify embed, or artwork taken from those products.
The board above is the game. You can play today’s puzzle without opening another tab. A matching title solves it. If you only know the singer, that guess is marked close and still spends an attempt. Skip when the opening is silence or a sound you cannot place. There are six attempts. The clip lengths are one second, then two, four, seven, eleven, and sixteen.
Today’s song is chosen from the local calendar date, so the same browser gets the same puzzle until midnight where you are. Refreshing the page does not roll a new daily song. When the result is saved, you can practice other songs on the same board. Practice does not erase the daily result. That is the “daily-ish” part: one official puzzle for the day, then more songs if you want them.
If you would rather pick a genre and keep a streak with no daily lock, play Songless Unlimited, the free music guessing game. It is the older music page on this site and it lives in the same Music DLE games category. The wider shelf, including games outside music, starts on the DLE HQ homepage.
A daily puzzle with no download
Hookstep does not ask you to install anything. The page loads the board, you press Play intro, and the browser plays a short preview. The first press has to be yours. Browsers block sound until a person starts it. After that, a miss or a skip starts the next length for you, because that click or key press still counts as the gesture.
Type a title or an artist into the box, or pick a row from the suggestions that appear after two letters. Arrow keys move through that list, and Enter submits the highlighted row. If you already know the words, ignore the list and guess. The match ignores case, accents, and extra punctuation, and it ignores tags such as a radio edit or a featured-artist credit.
Unlimited practice after today’s song
The daily puzzle is one song. Unlimited, on this page, means the practice button after that result. Practice another song loads a different preview, with the same six attempts and the same growing intro. You can keep doing that. Those rounds are not a second daily score, and they do not change the result you can share from today’s puzzle.
Come back tomorrow and the date line on the board moves forward. The next puzzle is another track from the same catalog, picked from the new date. It is not a global tournament and it is not saved to an account. The daily record sits in this browser. Clear the site data and today’s result goes with it.
Heardle Rules With No Download
People search for a heardle when they want this shape of game: a daily song, a tiny first listen, and a clip that grows if you need it. Hookstep follows that shape and then stops. It is not a reskin of someone else’s app, and it does not connect to a streaming subscription. The audio is the start of a short preview used for identification. Sometimes that preview opens on a chorus rather than the album’s first second. The game is honest about that. You are naming the recording from the sample you were given, not from a master tape.
Six attempts is the whole budget. A wrong title, a close artist guess, and a skip each spend one. A correct title stops the round immediately, even on the first second. You cannot store attempts for later, and you cannot rewind to a shorter clip after you have moved on. You can press play again to hear the current length from the top, or pause it.
- One daily song per local calendar day. The date on your device decides which puzzle loads.
- Six attempts. Lengths are 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, and 16 seconds of the preview.
- A title match solves the puzzle. The share line shows how many attempts you used.
- An artist-only match is close. It spends an attempt and does not solve the puzzle.
- Skip spends an attempt and unlocks the next length.
- The sixth attempt reveals the title, artist, and cover whether you solved it or not.
- Share copies a spoiler-free grid. It does not include the song title.
- Practice songs use the same rules and do not replace the daily result.
- The result stays in local storage on this device only.
What the heardle-style grid is telling you
The six bars under the logo are the attempts, not a volume meter. The gold bar is the length you are on. Coral bars are lengths you have already spent. A share uses a dot for a miss or a skip, a half-dot for a close artist guess, and a filled dot for the solve. You can paste that into a chat without naming the song for anyone who has not played.
If a preview fails to start, press play again. If the song list itself fails to load, the board says so and offers another try. A failed load is not a lost attempt. The daily song is tied to the track that was saved for today’s date, so a later refresh keeps that same puzzle instead of quietly swapping it.
Tips for Unlimited Online Heardle Practice
Treat the first second as a test, not a guess quota
Play the one-second clip with the volume up, and do not type while it is running. A kick drum, a spoken count-in, or a single bass note is sometimes the entire clue. If the second is hiss or a generic hi-hat, skip. Spending the first attempt on a random title throws away the only moment when an early solve is still available. Two calm skips put you on the seven-second listen, which is long enough for a vocal or a hook in most previews.
When the voice is obvious, submit the artist once. The close mark tells you the singer is right. Use the next length to separate that singer’s songs. Guessing the artist again does not add information. Wait for a lyric, a guitar figure, or the way the chorus enters.
Use practice as ear training, not as a reroll
You cannot reroll today’s puzzle, and that is useful. The constraint is what makes a daily heardle-style game different from an endless quiz. If you miss it, read the answer, share the grid if you want, and then use practice to hear how other songs open. Practice is where you learn the difference between a fade-in and a cold vocal. Tomorrow’s puzzle is easier if you have heard a few of those shapes on purpose.
Suggestions are a spelling tool. If you can hum the song and cannot spell the title, type the words you do have and pick the row. If the list is a crowd of songs you did not mean, trust the audio instead. A search result is not a hint from the puzzle. It is just a catalog of titles that match the letters you typed.
Headphones help on the first two lengths. They matter less once the clip reaches eleven seconds. On a phone, the fullscreen control on this page gives the board more room, and the rules stay the same. If you are done for the day, leave. The result will be here when you come back, until local midnight.
Hookstep sits next to older music play on DLE HQ, especially Songless Unlimited, which is the unlimited lane game rather than the daily one. If you want a puzzle that is not about music at all, the DLE HQ homepage lists what is actually playable, including newer pages while they are still in Fresh Finds. The music shelf itself is Music DLE games.
FAQ
Is Hookstep a heardle game?
It is a heardle-style daily song puzzle: six attempts and an intro clip that grows. The game’s name is Hookstep. It is an unofficial fan-made game and it is not affiliated with Spotify or Heardle.
Is Hookstep free to play online?
Yes. It runs in the browser on this page. There is no download, no account, and no subscription. Practice songs after the daily result are free as well.
Do I need Spotify?
No. Hookstep does not use Spotify. The clip is a short preview loaded for identification. You do not sign in anywhere to play.
How long is the intro?
The first listen is one second. Misses and skips open the same preview to two, four, seven, eleven, and sixteen seconds. It is a sample, not the full song.
Why is it the same song when I refresh?
The daily puzzle is tied to your local calendar date. Refreshing keeps today’s song. A new date loads a different one. Practice songs are separate and do not replace that daily result.
What counts as a correct guess?
The song title has to match, ignoring case, accents, and extra punctuation. A featured-artist tag or a label such as radio edit is ignored. Naming only the artist is a close guess and spends an attempt.
Can I play more than once?
You get one daily puzzle. After it is finished you can play practice songs with the same six-attempt rules. Practice is unlimited. It does not rewrite the daily share result.
Is my result public?
No. It stays in local storage on this device. Share copies a grid of symbols, not the song title, and only if you press the button.
What if the clip will not play?
Press play again. If the preview never starts, it does not spend an attempt by itself. If the whole song list fails to load, use Try again. A broken load is not a loss.
Where are the other music games?
Songless Unlimited is the other music game on DLE HQ, and it has no daily lock. Both games are listed on the Music category page, and every current game is linked from the DLE HQ homepage.
