Tic Tac Word Unlimited
Four guesses to claim a square. Three claimed squares in a line take the round.
Tic Tac Word Unlimited on DLE HQ is nine squares, three across and three down, and you can start another board whenever you want. Each square hides a different five-letter word. Open one and you have four guesses. Teal means the letter is in the right spot, gold means it is in the word but in the wrong spot, and stone means it is absent or an extra copy. Solve the word and the square is yours: a teal disc and the word. Miss all four and the square is lost: a rust cross and the word. Three claimed squares in a row, a column, or either diagonal win. Three lost squares in one of those lines lose. A full board with no line is a draw. You choose every square. There is no computer player taking a turn. It will feel familiar if you play daily games like Wordle: you propose a word, and the tiles tell you what to keep, what to move, and what to drop. Those daily puzzles stop after one word. Here the clues are spent to take squares, and New round puts up nine new words at once. There is no login and no download. Wins, losses, draws, and the streak stay in this browser only.
How to Play Tic Tac Word Unlimited
- Look at the 3×3 board. Untouched squares read Open, and each hides a five-letter word.
- Open one square, type a five-letter word, and press Enter, or tap Enter on the keys. You have four guesses. A word that is too short, not in the list, or already used here is refused, the row shakes, and the try is not spent.
- Read the row. Teal is a right spot, gold is in the word in the wrong spot, and stone is absent or an extra copy. On that square, teal on a key replaces gold, and gold replaces stone. The next square starts with a blank keyboard.
- A solve claims the square. Four misses lose it, and the word is shown either way. Back to board keeps those guesses. Resume square returns to them. Another square stays shut until this one is finished.
- Three claimed squares in a row, column, or either diagonal win. Three lost squares on a line lose, and unopened squares stay blank. New round, in the header, loads nine words at once. It also sits under the board after the round. Leaving that way, or refreshing, is not scored.
Free online, with no download
On a computer, click the frame, then type. Enter submits and Backspace deletes. On a phone, use the keys inside the frame. The guess view names the row and column from the top left and shows guesses used, such as 0/4 or 2/4, and the open square shows the same fraction. If the word list fails to load, refresh or press Try again. That is not a lost guess.
Tic Tac Word Unlimited Rules and Tips
Four guesses belong to one square, not to the day. A correct word claims it on that guess, including the fourth. Two squares cannot be open at once. The round ends when a line is complete, and every square on a finished line is outlined.
- Nine distinct five-letter words, drawn from the 2,500-word answer list.
- The nine words from a finished round, or from a round you leave with New round, are set aside when at least nine other answers remain.
- Guesses must be in the list of 8,616 five-letter words. Too short, unknown, or repeated on that square: the try is not spent. The message counts the guesses you have left.
- Teal: right spot. Gold: in the word, wrong spot. Stone: absent, or an extra copy.
- Right spots are marked first. A leftover copy can mark a later tile gold, from left to right. Further copies are stone.
- Claimed squares show a teal disc and the word. Lost squares show a rust cross and the word. An opened square shows a fraction such as 0/4. Untouched squares read Open.
- Eight lines count: three rows, three columns, and both diagonals. Three claimed squares wins. Three lost squares loses.
- A full board with no three-in-a-row is a draw, and no line is outlined.
- New round sits in the header the whole time, and again under the board when the round is over. Leaving early is not a win, a loss, or a draw.
- Won, Lost, Drawn, Streak, and Best sit on the board view, in this browser only. A win adds one to the streak. A loss or a draw resets it.
- Colorblind colors stays on in this browser. The button reads Colorblind colors, or Colorblind colors on. Teal gains a white inner rim, gold gains stripes, stone gains a slash, and the keys match. The line reads: Teal with a white rim: right spot. Stripes: in the word, wrong spot. Slash: not in the word.
- Under the board, the credit line reads: Word list: ENABLE1, public domain. 2,500 answers, 8,616 accepted guesses. It is the same words.json file as Wordle Unlimited on this site.
Open the square that sits on more lines
The middle square sits on four lines: its row, its column, and both diagonals. A corner sits on three, and an edge center sits on two. Open the middle when the words look equal. A claimed center helps every remaining plan, and a lost center threatens every line through it.
Spend the first guess on common letters
Open with five different common letters. Then stop typing anything that came back stone. Gold has a forbidden seat, so do not return that letter to the same column.
Count a letter before you repeat it
Suppose the word is allay and you guess llama. The second letter is teal, because both words have L there. The first L is gold, since allay still has an unused L. Both A tiles are gold: allay has two A’s, and llama missed those seats. M is stone. Keep the second L, place the other L and both A’s, and drop M. A later copy that returns stone means the word has no further copy.
Close your line before a lost line closes
If two claimed squares share a line, solving the third wins. If two lost squares share a line, four misses on the third lose. Back to board shows that threat, and Resume square keeps the guesses you spent. The next word still starts from a blank keyboard.
Tic Tac Word Unlimited vs Wordle
A round of daily games like Wordle gives you one hidden word and a fixed number of guesses, then a wait. Tic Tac Word Unlimited keeps four guesses, but they belong to one square, not to the day, and the next board does not wait until tomorrow. A miss can hand the other side a square. A solve claims one toward three in a row, column, or diagonal. Wordle Unlimited on this site is one word and six guesses. This page is nine words and a line of three.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tic Tac Word Unlimited free?
Yes. It is free in the browser. There is no login and no payment. Won, Lost, Drawn, Streak, and Best stay on this device only.
How many guesses do I get on a square?
Four. A correct word on any of those tries claims the square. A guess that is too short, outside the 8,616-word list, or already used on that square does not spend a try. The fourth miss loses the square and shows the word. You cannot reopen it.
How does a round end?
Three claimed squares in a row, column, or diagonal wins. Three lost squares on one of those eight lines loses. The round ends immediately, those squares are outlined, and a full board with no line is a draw. There is no computer turn.
Is there a daily limit?
No. New round loads nine words at once, even mid-board, and that unfinished round is not scored. Refreshing also loads a new board and is not a loss.
Do I need to download Tic Tac Word Unlimited?
No. It runs online in the browser. The list is the same ENABLE1 file as Wordle Unlimited, with 2,500 answers and 8,616 accepted guesses. Click the frame to type, or use the on-screen keys.
What is the board inside the frame called?
Our own build is called Quillgrid.
